Notes:
Just in time for the start of summer (2025), here's another one from Zach Top, who is quickly emerging as a true star, faithful to the traditional country sound. The chords here are so basic and simple, for both guitar and ukulele, that we'd encourage even the newest players to try this one out. BUT - while the chords are simple, the right time to play them is a little bit trickier.
That's because the structure of the song is not quite so simple - it's made up of unevenly shaped phrases, and they're peppered with half-bars (two beats each instead of four beats each), to make it all hang together. But if you keep your eyes on the moving chart, you'll see those half-bars coming, and specifically, they are bars 9, 19, 27, 33, 37, 47, 55, 61, 71, 81, 89, 99, and 109.
Guitar players, you can feel free to use a three-string barre with your first finger for the A chord shape, if you prefer.
And for the ukulele players: if your hands are large, you might find that the D chord shape is hard, because you have to squish three fingers together in parallel, in a small space. If this is you, we suggest playing the D chord with fingers 2, 1, and 3, in order from fourth string to second string, instead of the 1, 2, 3 order - which is what we show. And if you do this (even if your hands are small!), you'll find it much easier to transition between the D shape and the A shape - bonus!
So grab a cold one, wait for the moon to come out, take off your clothes and jump in the lake! Then you can dry off, grab your axe, make everyone else sing along as you bang this one out, and ENJOY!
