Description
"American Beauty is considered by many to be our finest album. Certainly, it contains a great many of our best loved songs. Of the ten songs on the record, eight would remain in our active repertoire for our entire performing career. "Box of Rain" was my first lead vocal, and the song itself served as a perfect lead in to the emotional landscape of the album. "Sugar Magnolia" was the vehicle that defined Bob's role as rocker, and "Sunshine Daydream," it's companion jam in live performance, provided Bob with ample opportunity to shriek ecstatically and generally let it all hang out. "Operator," Pigpen's first solo songwriting effort on record, was a portrait of Pig himself, sitting with a guitar and musing on what might have been. The five Hunter-Garcia ballads are among the finest products of their collaboration. "Friend of the Devil," "Candyman," "Ripple," "Brokedown Palace," and the stunning "Attics of My Life" -- all featuring our newfound delight in harmony vocals. The song that caps the album and arguably defines it is "Truckin'," the closer. We took our experiences on the road and made poetry. All the cities fusing into one: 'Chicago, New York, Detroit, they're all on the same street.' The loneliness of street life: 'Most of the time they're sitting and crying at home.' The omnipresence of drugs: 'Living on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine.' Being busted: 'Set up like a bowling pin.' And the line that passed into the collective lexicon: 'What a long strange trip it's been.' The last chorus defines the band itself: 'Truckin', I'm-a going home, woah-oh baby back where I belong, Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin' on.' Get back truckin' on - that's all we knew." - Phil Lesh in Searching For The Sound
