Description
RIP Mulgrew Miller, 5/29/2013. I was very fortunate to hear him play this song live on September 14, 2000. I was a senior in high school; it was one of my first jazz concerts and remains one of the best I've seen, and it was the experience that got me hooked on live jazz. That night changed the direction of my life. Thanks for everything, Grew.
One of my personal favorites, Mulgrew Miller's "Grew's Tune," the leadoff track from his 1992 RCA release 'Hand in Hand,' one of the best jazz albums of the last twenty years--yet unfortunately it's out of print, and has been for a long time. This song--the whole album, really--is a beautifully elegant piece of contemporary small-combo composition. The all-star ensemble includes Mulgrew Miller (piano), Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone), Eddie Henderson (trumpet and flugelhorn), Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone), Steve Nelson (vibraphone), Christian McBride (bass), and Lewis Nash (drums).
