Description
The original title of “Hawaiian Wedding Song” was “Ke Kali Nei Au” (Waiting There for Thee), which was adapted from a love song composed by Charles E. King in 1926. It was originally recorded in Hawaiian by Helen Desha Beamer. Later, the lyrics were rewritten by Al Hoffman and Dick Manning, and the song was re-named “Hawaiian Wedding Song.”
An earlier English version of “Ke Kali Nei Au” was performed by Bing Crosby, with lyrics by Johnny Burke. This version was recorded on February 9, 1951, with Betty Mullin and Lyn Murray and His Orchestra.
Andy Williams released a version in 1958, which reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 27 on the R&B chart.
Elvis Presley also performed another rendition of the song in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii.
