Song – Ved Herbjørn Gausta’s Bauta (At Herbjørn Gausta’s Monument) Dr. David Judisch, Baritone
1. In Telemark are many mountains,
Some are high and others long.
But largest is Gausta in Tinn district,
With Rjukan waterfall at its foot.
2. Here the boys grow big and strong;
They create legends and leave their marks.
About one among many, people spoke,
And Herbjørn Gausta he was named.
3. As a little boy he was clever with his hands.
He drew the homes around the lake shore.
And as he grew and became bigger,
He drew Gausta, his named brother.
4. Like sprouts and growth come with Spring,
So he grew in his given art-skills.
With a poet’s mind, he saw visions.
Soon form and color lay on his brush.
5. Then he went out in the wide world!
Italy, Germany, he included in his travels.
He learned much, he gathered in,
But never did he forget his home.
6. The greatest work which have won prizes
He had found motives for at home.
I mention only one with children and mother
In prayer gathered around a covered table.
7. Like many others he stretched his wings
And left his home, the good boy.
Across the western ocean, in Vesterheim,
Is room and work for one such as he.
8. On work orders he never had to wait,
For more than enough came from all directions.
His work must be written in big numbers.
They are found in churches, in homes, in halls.
9. His day and labor so well he used,
But time takes its toll on the earthly frame.
And then came the evening and he was set free.
Now he sleeps safely here in Harmony.
10. And this monument shall carry the memory
That Herbjørn Gausta is resting here.
But greatest of all that carries lasting value,
Remembered for his honest journey through life.
(by H. G. Odden, 1927, at the dedication of the Gausta monument.)
