Description

Happy spring, Easter and Passover! It feels like a perfect time to release this song. George Harrison wrote Here Comes the Sun during the cold and fraught winter of 1969, when the Beatles were undergoing legal issues. He composed it in Eric Clapton's garden, using a capo on the 7th fret of his acoustic guitar. His 1965 song If I Needed Someone used the same technique

George, Ringo and Paul recorded the backing track on July 7 1969 for the Abbey Road album. George played his Gibson J-200 acoustic with a capo on the 7th fret, Paul played bass and Ringo played drums. Later that day, George re-recorded the J-200 part. The original key was in A, but it was later sped up a semitone higher

George overdubbed an electric guitar part, fed into a Leslie speaker on August 6th. He also used a capo at the 7th fret for this, although it's unclear which guitar he used. I guessed that it was his 1968 Fender Rosewood Telecaster. That same day, or possibly on August 11th he recorded a second J-200 acoustic part, doubling the original.

At some point George recorded a guitar solo onto the bridge section, which was later erased. This was revealed in Martin Scorsese's documentary about George- Living in the Material World. The clip shows George Martin, his son Giles, and Dhani Harrison listening to the original master tapes. None of them knew that Harrison had recorded a guitar solo, including George Martin who was at the sessions. You can watch this clip here https://youtu.be/0SOES9PT6g4

For this cover I'm using a 1970's Japanese copy of a Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar. It's called an Ibanez Jamboree 698, and I just bought it a few weeks ago! I'm using a Schubb capo on the 7th fret, just like George. It's being mic'd with a Neumann TLM-103 condenser mic. And I added a little bit of ADT/tape flanging from the Waves Abbey Road J-37 plug-in

For the leslie/electric guitar I'm using my 2007 Fender American Telecaster into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb amp. The leslie effect is being simulated using my Strymon Lex pedal

It's also unclear which guitar was used for the lost guitar solo. But it did have a leslie effect on it as well. I'm using my 2022 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster into the Pro Reverb with the Strymon Lex. It's being driven by an Analogman King of Tone

Some guitar parts worth noting-
0:01 George tunes his A string before going into the opening riff
0:11 the overdubbed J-200 joins in
0:16 George taps his foot
1:37 the overdubbed J-200 only plays the descending riff, no strumming
1:45 the lost guitar solo begins
2:34 the Telecaster plays a G6 chord with high e
3:02 the Telecaster ends on an open D string. This makes it an Am7 chord, whereas in the bridge the riff starts on a C major (F on capo)

My Gear:
Early 1970's Ibanez Jamboree 698 (J-200 copy)
2005 Fender American Hot Rod '52 Vintage Telecaster (with '51 Nocaster Fender Custom Shop Pickups)
2022 Fender Custom Shop '63 Journeyman Sonic Blue Stratocaster (with Pure Vintage '59 Fender pickups)
1974 Fender Pro Reverb (w/2x12" Weber 12F150 Ceramic speakers)
Strymon Lex (Leslie Pedal)
Analogman King of Tone
Neumann TLM-103
