Description
Yu Zhenfei (俞振飞, 1902-1993) sings "Jing Bian" (惊变, Disaster Strikes), from "Changsheng Dian"《长生殿》(The Palace of Eternal Life; also translated as The Palace of Eternal Youth). Sung to the tune "Fendie'er"《粉蝶儿》(The White Butterfly).
Lyrics:
天淡云闲,
列长空数行新雁。
御园中,秋色斓斑:
柳添黄,苹减绿,红莲脱瓣。
一抹雕栏,
喷清香桂花初绽。
Yu Zhenfei was a respected performer of both Kunqu (昆曲, Chinese classical opera dating to the Ming Dynasty) and Beijing opera (京剧). His father, with whom he studied, was the Kunqu singer Yu Sulu (俞粟庐, 1847-1930).
"Changsheng Dian," composed during the Qing Dynasty, is one of the four most important Kunqu plays. It tells the story of the Tang emperor Xuanzong and his love for his beautiful consort Yang Guifei.
Recording made c. 1926 and released on 78-rpm record by the Shanghai-based Gaoting (Odeon) Records (高亭公司唱片).
