Description

In 2001, 2-step garage was enjoying it's last year of having a widespread following, both in the underground dance scene as well as in the mainstream. Many of the producers who would remain loyal to the genre started to take the sound into a completely different direction, using minor keys and heavier drum samples to make the songs more darker than the typical rigid and sterile blueprint most people remember 2-step by. Horsepower Productions demonstrates an early example of this change in direction within the genre on Giving up on Love that year, which was their 4th 12" release. They would go on to release additional 12" singles and full length albums, and in 2002-03 their sound became even darker and ultimately laid down the cornerstone for what we now know as dubstep. Horsepower Productions are revered by many fans as dubstep's founding fathers, and were showcased on many of Tempa's very first releases (now dubstep's most popular record label).

Ironically enough, this track was released on a label called Turn U On, which was a sister label of No U-Turn, the drum & bass label owned by Nico that was one of the first to push the sound of techstep in the mid-1990s via releases by Ed Rush, Trace, and Ruffkut. Turn U On only released two 12"s, this one, followed by another one by Horsepower Productions in 2002.
