"You might recognize this viral sound:

Daisy Bell is often featured in creepy videos and has become associated with horror.

But it wasn’t always like that. The song originated as a popular phonograph recording in 1892. The version we all know, with the computer voice, was actually the first ever use of computer speech synthesis by IBM in 1961. This was a celebratory moment and not really seen as “creepy.”

That is, until it’s use in Stanley Kubrick film “2001 a space odyssey” 7 years later. In this space horror epic, the maniacal computer HAL can be heard singing Daisy Bell as it’s being shutdown, solidifying the creepy nature of the song.

40 years later we’re still seeing Daisy Bell used to denote feelings of dreadful nostalgia and horror."
