Description
WORDS: Published in 1881 by WH Turton, a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers; he wrote 16 other hymns, but this is the only one now in common use.
MUSIC: ‘Song 1’ by the great Jacobean/Elizabethan composer Orlando Gibbons. He contributed 17 hymn tunes to George Wither’s ‘The Hymnes and Songs of the Church’ (1623), many of which are still popular today. Gibbons’s tunes are labelled ‘Song’ with a number, which represents the hymn number assigned in this book.
