My first encounter with this song came when a friend of mine showed me Blossom Dearie’s recording of it.
Blossom Dearie is one of my favorite artists mainly because of her repertoire choices. She was the first to record a lot of Cy Coleman’s compositions.
She recorded and performed many songs that are uncommon, but have lyrics that tell stories and evoke scenes that take the listener into nature. When I first heard this song I was single in NYC longing to find love. When I heard the bridge section, I cried, feeling that it was the story of my life.
My solo piano version was recorded on a gorgeous Steinway grand at Sear Sound in Manhattan. I gave myself an hour at the piano with the mics and cameras rolling to let loose and play whatever came to mind. A lot of free improvisation ensued, and this song came right out of that impromptu free play.
After listening to every version I could find I discovered on Tony Bennett’s version that there is a very short verse, bringing us right into Manhattan (where I was living when I first heard the original version by Blossom)! I also discovered that all the versions I found were very straight ahead utilizing acoustic instruments and I wanted to add a little tinge of modernity by recording it on my Nord. I added drive to the electric piano sound as the track went on to add to the yearning effect…yearning for love and striving for hope despite the feelings of desperation to find true love.
