Description
Vera Lynn's concert at The Guards Depot, Caterham. From the back of the album:
“We might well adapt the words of an old song in this case to “All the soldiers love a nice girl”, or possibly a little further to “All the soldiers love Vera Lynn”, in either case it is an undeniable truth. It applies to no-one else with such justification---for Vera Lynn is the continued and continuing Favourite of the Forces.
It was round about 1941, that her voice became such an integral part of our lives, although she had been known long before that, singing with Charlie Kunz and Ambrose. But it was during those bleakest days of the war that the Vera Lynn way of singing a song, with its yearning sentimentality, became the main comfort and delight of the hard-bitten wartime soldier…
Now the officers and men of the Guards Depot, Caterham show their appreciation and special affection for Vera in this recorded concert. With Woolf Phillips and his Orchestra, and the Clubmen, she introduces us to some of her newer songs, My Son, My Son, A Blossom Fell and If You Love Me, and inevitably re-introduces us to those old favourites that made her into the Favourite of the Forces---We’ll Meet Again, Auf Wiederseh’n and, of course, Yours. ‘Now ladies and gentlemen’, as Jack Jackson says in his introduction to the record, ‘The moment you’re waiting for---and here she is---Vera Lynn!’”
Recorded in 1955
