During the Nazi era, only the first verse was used — its association with nationalism led to it being discontinued after WWII.
In West Germany (1952), Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and the Federal President agreed to use only the third verse as the national anthem.
This decision continued in unified Germany after 1991.
Today, the first and second verses are not used at official events due to their historical misuse.
