Max Jaffa OBE 1911 – 1991. A British light orchestral violinist and bandleader. He is best remembered as the leader of the Palm Court Orchestra and trio, with Jack Byfield (piano) and Reginald Kilbey (cello), which broadcast on BBC Radio. His career lasted 70 years, before retiring in 1990.
Max Jaffa refreshed his violin playing after the war by studying with Sascha Lasserson, and soon joined the Mantovani Orchestra - he was the leader and soloist on its bestseller Charmaine (1951). He would sometimes play with the Albert Sandler Trio when Sandler himself was ill, and after Sandler's death in 1948 took his place alongside the other members, cellist Reginald Kilbey and pianist Jack Byfield, to form the Max Jaffa Trio. From 1956 until 1986 his concerts from The Spa, Scarborough were frequently featured on BBC Radio in shows such as Melody on Strings, Music For Your Pleasure and (most notably) Grand Hotel, on which he led the Palm Court Orchestra and was dubbed 'King of the Palm Court'. A Yorkshire Television documentary in 1986 filmed his final season as Scarborough, aged 74. Available to view on YouTube.
"I'll See You in My Dreams" is a popular song and jazz standard, composed by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Gus Kahn, and published in 1924. It was recorded on December 4 that year, by Isham Jones conducting Ray Miller's Orchestra. Released on Brunswick Records, it charted for 16 weeks during 1925, spending seven weeks at number 1 in the United States. Other popular versions in 1925 were by Marion Harris; Paul Whiteman; Ford & Glenn; and Lewis James; with three of these four reaching the Top 10.

The song was sung by Jeanne Crain in Margie (1946) and was chosen as the title song of the 1951 film, I'll See You in My Dreams, a musical biography of Kahn.

Max Jaffa was the resident 'Light Music' maestro of Scarborough from 1960 until 1986 his concert frequently broadcast live on the BBC Light Program. Melody on Strings, Music for Pleasure, Friday Night is Music Night and Grand Hotel all came from the Scarborough Spa, Grand Hall.

Max had hundreds, even thousands of followers especially in the town of Scarborough itself. Many 'Scarborians' would strive to attend every single concert their number swelled by the coach-loads of fans from across the country. An iconic seaside venue, the famous Scarborough Spa Orchestra based in a stunning Victorian Theatre/Grand Hall complex and Mr Max Jaffa accompanied most often by his pianist and arranger Mr.Jack Byfield.

Of his many fans from Scarborough one stands out, a lady who campaigned years before, to save the Spa from demolition and won! This victory much to the benefit of all those who have since been both entertained there and delighted by the wonderful seaside backdrop and span of the broad curve of the picturesque South Bay.
Thanks to Christine Cox for all her help and support in the making of this video and for enriching the lives of so many local people over the last 50 + years. I shall always feel privileged to have known Christine and honoured to have shared a special friendship with someone who has done so much good on several levels for her fellow human beings.
