Most countries strive to preserve and promote their cultural heritage... and South Korea is no exception.
South Korea now wants to share its most beloved folk songs with the rest of the world.
Kim Bo-kyoung tells us more.
The most popular Korean traditional folk song of them all,... the one that most Koreans can sing at least a part of,... is Arirang.
Being a song that captures the spirit of the Korean people,... a startling 60 different versions exist with their lyrics and melodies differing region by region.
Three of the best known versions are Jeongseon, Miryang, and Jindo Arirang,... all named after specific provinces.
As 2022 marks the tenth year since Arirang was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity,... the mayors of the three regions are joining arms to promote the song both at home and internationally as well.

"The spirit and culture of people is increasingly significant. As we usher in the post-COVID era, our regions will upgrade the identity of Arirang so more people around the world can enjoy and show interest in the song."

The mayors gathered in Jeongseon-gun county on Tuesday to officially launch a joint cooperative body aimed at preserving and developing the cultural heritage.
After working-level discussions,... they agreed that three heads are better than one.

"Our three regions plan to globalize Arirang through academic symposiums, exchange performances and exhibitions along with education and research."

"If semiconductor chips are the core of the Korea’s industry, the chip of Korea’s culture is Arirang. With Arirang in the center, we believe performances and culture can be expanded."

To celebrate the day,... a show was laid on, including a musical show containing a variety of performances of 'Arirang'.

"The first step of the journey to make global audiences aware of Arirang has begun as the three regions have announced that they will join together to pass on the values and heritage of Korea’s representative folk song. Kim Bo-kyoung, Arirang News, Jeongseon."
