Description

"Jules Egghard" is a rather obvious pseudonym used by the Viennese pianist and composer Count Julius Hardegg (1834-67). He studied piano (as did Liszt) with Carl Czerny, and one of his most notable achievements as a pianist would surely have been the premiere performance - as a teenager - in Weimar in 1851 of Liszt's piano and orchestra reworking of Schubert's 'Wanderer Fantasy' under the baton of Joseph Hellmesberger. His salon pieces were once very popular, and deserve reappraisal because they are surely as evocative of 19th century Vienna as the work of the Strauss family. The title of this piece evokes nostalgia for Styria. It is an amazing evocation of Austrian folk music - note the skilful harp imitations in the crossed hands section in the middle of the piece. This was one of Egghard's most successful pieces.
