The name "Fraser" might lead you to the conclusion that this is a Scottish piece, but I have heard that it's from eastern Ireland. I'll try to be brief - A major element in the policy to totally subjugate the Irish nation to English rule was the granting of ALL lands east of the Shannon to Protestant (thus - English) landowners, turning the entire rural population of the country into sharecroppers. This was a catastrophe which led to millions of deaths by starvation, on one of the world's most fertile islands. Colonel Fraser was an English (of Scottish descent) landholder who treated his tenants fairly, and one of his tenants made up this piece to remember his fairness by. Not all landlords were total monsters.
