One of the brightest stars of the young New York jazz scene brought A L’ARME! Vol X+I to its concertante conclusion: Kassa Overall is a drummer, singer, MC, and producer, as fluent in the vocabulary of hip hop as with jazz traditions, well-acquainted with the underground and avant garde scenes in Brooklyn. His latest album Animals has been celebrated as the greatest masterpiece of “one of modern jazz music’s most audacious futurists” (Pitchfork). NPR described it as “the sound of whole new lanes opening up.” Overall sees all of his projects as a challenge of curating and arranging human chemistry. Having worked together with Angela Davis, Vijay Iyer, and Yoko Ono, among others, this time Tomoki Sanders joined the well-oiled machine that is Kassas band. The non-binary musician inherited their saxophone from none other than their father, Pharoah Sanders.
