On the Hawaiian island of Moloka‘i there is a style of hula where the men imitate ku‘i. Ku‘i, in the Hawaiian language, means “to pound, punch or strike; to box.” But it has a separate and unrelated meaning, “to join, stitch, sew, splice, unite,” which is actually the definition when referring to hula ku‘i which simply means any interpretive hula. I wanted to embrace this juxtaposition of various meanings of the word, and also draw upon melodies found in Hawaiian compositions such as Sons of Hawai‘i and Ho‘onani I Ka Makua Mau.
