How do you know what spring is like without strolling in the garden?
How can you understand the beauty of regions south of the Yangtze River without listening to the Kunqu Opera?
As a "jewel" of Chinese opera, flowering in the water town of Suzhou, Kunqu attracts opera lovers from all over the world.
More than 600 years ago, a poet named Gu Jian created the predecessor to Kunqu, called Kunshan Qiang.
After innovations made by artists including Wei Liangfu in the Ming Dynasty, a tune called "Shui Mo Diao" that absorbed the merits of both northern and southern tunes came into being.
Then it gradually developed into the distinctive and vigorous genre of opera known to the world.The soft Suzhou dialect, accompanied by string and bamboo instruments, is sung in a strictly stylized way, and performed with postures that fit the opera text, creating a delicate and fascinating performance.
The emotional expressions and melodious songs of the stage performers draw the audience into every engaging story.
Many plays in Kunqu, including The Peony Pavilion, The Palace of Eternal Life and The Peach Blossom Fan, are all-time masterpieces of ancient Chinese operatic literature.
The legends of kings and generals, the romantic love between literati and beauty, and the love and hatred of ordinary people, are all represented by Kunqu Opera. Sincere love transcends life and death, and touching stories go beyond history and countries.
After 400 years of ups and downs, Kunqu Opera has emerged from the depths of history, bearing the fruits of Chinese culture. The joys and sorrows both within and without the opera are integrated into its music, interpreting the various charms of Chinese aesthetics.
