ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The successive releases of Stress Killer and the EP No Pain No Champagne with the label Heavenly Sweetness cemented Léon Phal’s place on the French jazz scene, alongside his fellow members of the trio Émile Londonien. Phal and his faithful collaborators (including Gauther Toux) are close to the English scene in many respects, representing a complex yet coherent musical heritage. Figuring among this heritage is the corpus of genres that fall under the umbrella of improvised music, but also and above all elements of electronic, rap, and African music, the latter via Ghanaian artist Kweku aka K.O.G.

Performing on the stage of the superb ancient theater in Vienne, a town located in the French department Isère, the saxophonist and his group seem to occupy both time and space. The perfectly-oiled ensemble captivates the audience right away with a looping synth part backed by an unstoppable rhythm. There are plenty of stand-out moments, notably in “Vibing in Ay” which features an enchanting remix by the excellent DJ Folamour, and in “Still Waiting,” a track the young thirtysomething artist dedicates to his roots in France’s Champagne region. The sequence is elegant in all respects, powered by an astounding groove which is attested to alone by Rémi Boutssières’ incredibly fine double bass playing. The title track of the last album is another case in point–a song that takes the form of a profession of faith, and which culminates here in the ritualistic practice of taking a photograph with the audience.
