El tema de los calabozos de The Legend of Zelda es una composición original de Koji Kondo. Arreglo de la versión de Caifanes de La Negra Tomasa hecho por Oscar López y Caifanes, basados en la composición original de Guillermo Rodríguez Fiffe. Remix y mashup realizados por Titan of Plasma. Pueden usar este remix libremente siempre y cuando se mencionen los créditos correspondientes.

The Legend of Zelda was a very popular game during my childhood. Almost at the same time, we could hear the musical arrangement from the band Caifanes for the Cuban song “La Negra Tomasa” on the radio. I just loved both of them. I even had this song EP, which, surprisingly, included a quite interesting version with a purely instrumental episode right after the vocal portion. Since then I thought and I still think that such part sounded a lot like the underworld theme from The Legend of Zelda… if you are familiar with the song, don’t tell me you didn’t thought that way too. Doing a mashup from both melodies was unavoidable. It wasn’t surprising at all that they matched almost perfectly (except for some harmony arrangements here and there for the underworld theme).

For the occasion, I wanted to try the Konami VRC7 chipset for the first time. The initial train of thought was simple: the original NES instruments for the underworld theme and the FM channels for “La Negra Tomasa”… but that wouldn’t have been fun at all, so both themes often switch instrumentations during the remix. The result is this crazy mashup you’re listening right now.

For this cover I created four custom instruments for the VRC7 channels: an FM emulation of the NES triangle and THREE electric guitars. Those guitars were real b**ches. Even my emulation of such guitar on the square 2A03 channel was easier to do. Enough talk, then; I leave you so you can enjoy this by yourselves.

Durante mi niñez, el juego The Legend of Zelda estaba de moda. Casi al mismo tiempo, sonaba gustosamente en la radio el arreglo de Caifanes para la pieza cubana La Negra Tomasa. Ambos me encantaban. Llegué a tener incluso el EP de esta canción, que para mi sorpresa incluía una interesante versión con un episodio puramente instrumental tras la porción cantada. Desde entonces creí y sigo creyendo que esa parte se parecía mucho al tema de los calabozos del Legend of Zelda… ¿a poco no les daba esa impresión también? Era inevitable que hiciera un mashup de las melodías. No me asombró para nada que ambas cuadraran tan bien (aunque sí tuve que hacer uno que otro arreglito al tema de los calabozos).

En esta ocasión quise probar por primera vez utilizar el chip VRC7 de Konami. Era sencillo pensar en usar los instrumentos originales del NES/Fami para el tema de los calabozos de Zelda y los canales FM para La Negra Tomasa… ah, pero eso no hubiera sido divertido, así que en ocasiones los temas intercalan instrumentación. El resultado es este loco mashup que escuchan ahora.

En este cóver me sirvo de cuatro instrumentos personalizados en los canales VRC7: una emulación FM del canal de onda triangular y TRES guitarras eléctricas. Esas guitarras fueron unas verdaderas perras. Confieso que incluso me fue más fácil emular tal guitarra con el canal de onda cuadrada del 2A03. Sin más, los dejo para que lo disfruten ustedes mismos.
