Description
The original Spanish lyrics tell the story of a Cuban sailor who laments parting with his Mexican girlfriend and asks her to cherish his spirit if it returns to her in the form of a dove. I've tried to paint the sad mood of the lovers' parting, the listlessness of the girl's waiting and the joy of their final spiritual reunion.
Originally "La Paloma" ("The Dove") is a song composed and written around 1863 by Spanish composer Sebastian Iradier (later Yradier) from the Basque region. He wrote the song after he paid a visit to Cuba in 1861, where he was influenced by Cuba's habanera dance rhythm, which he later put into his composition. Unfortunately he died in 1865 in obscurity, never to learn how popular his song would become.
In the ensuing 149 years, the song has been produced and re-interpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements and recordings. This version is Paul Mauriat's famous arrangement.
Over the years, new lyrics have developed in many languages. They typically involve images of white doves and true loves, but they all depart somewhat in storyline from the original Spanish lyrics.
