Michael Derrico playing La Virgen de la Macarena by Rafael Méndez at his senior recital held in West Virginia University's Museum Education Center on April 2, 2018.
Program Notes: Nicknamed “The Bull Fighter’s Song”, this traditional Spanish fanfare is arguably Méndez’s most popular compositions. Originally composed for trumpet and wind band, this work has been played by countless trumpet and brass playing icons including Méndez himself, Arturo Sandoval, Vincent DiMartino, and Canadian Brass. I chose this piece because it highlights and challenged me to tackle all of the technical and rhythmic aspects in which I excel.
