Description
I could tell stories for a small chapter about how this main title came to be (and I will in future posts).
I first became friends with Dick Wolf when he was working as a writer on #HillStreetBlues. When he called me with his idea for #LawAndOrder, his marching orders were that the main title has to sign the signature for New York City. I laughed and said George Gershwin already did that pretty well with Rhapsody in Blue and I don’t think I can compete with that. He laughed and said, “Well, that’s what I need,” and I said I’ll give it my best shot. That’s why the lead instrument in the bridge is a clarinet, my little homage to Mr. Gershwin.
Interestingly enough, he created this show for a reason that was never utilized. The intent was to broadcast on the network as an hour-long drama, but then for syndication it would be bifurcated and sent to syndication in half-hour chunks. The “law” portion (crime and cops) first, and the “order” (lawyers and trial) second. #dundun
