Description
MacDowell begins his Woodland Sketches with what would become his most famous composition, To a Wild Rose. Originally pulled from the trash by his wife (good thing he didn't toss it into the fireplace!), To a Wild Rose began life as a writing exercise; MacDowell completed a short piece each morning as a way to maintain his compositional technique. Written between 1896 and 1902, Woodland Sketches is a fascinating collection of interwoven pieces, sharing many motifs, rhythms and harmonies from piece to piece. It's really a treat to recognize these little reminders that are sprinkled throughout this Romantic masterwork.
