Description
This video comprises multiple clips from the 1974 British rock film, STARDUST, starring David Essex as Jim MacLaine, whose working-class-roots to stardom story borrows more than a little from the arc of John Lennon’s life and career. (The first part of this story, THAT’LL BE THE DAY from 1973, actually co-stars Ringo.) Writer Ray Connolly crafted one of the most authentic rise/fall rock films ever made, and director Michael Apted (a few years before COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER) gave the film a very naturalistic look and feel. The movie of course is largely helped by the believable performances of pop/rock luminaries like David Essex, Adam Faith, and Who drumming legend Keith Moon…who looks right in his element drinking & hell-raising onscreen. Also visible is roots rocker Dave Edmunds, from Love Sculpture (and later Rockpile), as guitarist Alex.
Edmunds actually wrote, played, and produced the original “Stray Cats” songs for the STARDUST soundtrack [except for the title track written by Essex himself]. Including this song, “Make Me Good”, which is meant to emulate mid-60’s Beatles, and sung by Edmunds himself on the soundtrack. I was disappointed by how little this song was featured in the movie. An Essex-overdubbed version was used in the film and the entire sequence is included in this video: from 00:29 to 01:15. Using the original Edmunds soundtrack version, I expanded the montage sequence into this video…to give this great song a little more exposure.
Look for both these excellent, now forgotten, Ray Connolly-scripted rock films: THAT’LL BE THE DAY and STARDUST.
Needless to say, I claim no ownership on this material.
