The second offering from this rising New York act marks a pivotal ascent, as if the very title, signals their ambition to rise above the ruins of their beginnings and claim a throne forged in steel, soot, and spiritual flame. Now a fully-formed trio, Mars Ultor unveils a more commanding and unified presence, steeped in the same saccharine yet scathing black metal spirit of their debut, but refined, emboldened, and riotously alive.

Where “Demo I” flirted with post black and other detours from black metal in rough-hewn sketches, “Apotheosis” emerges as a more mature, intentional work. The seams between genres, black metal, heavy metal, and perhaps glimpses of punk's textures, are now welded rather than stitched, forming a singular soundscape that feels less like a clash and more like a battle standard raised in glorious defiance. There is a newfound clarity to the madness, a discipline in chaos.

Mars Ultor have not abandoned their relish for harmony, but have honed it into a sharper weapon. The black'n'roll verve simmers under the ash, lending a swaggering defiance to the EP that distances it from the more post black debut.
