Description
The 15 February protests were unprecedented not only in terms of the size but also in terms of the international coordination.
An estimated 11 million people in 60 different countries took to the streets to protest against the looming war with Iraq
The protest in Rome involved around three million people, and is listed in the 2004 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest anti-war rally in history
At the time, many commentators were hopeful that this global mobilization of unprecedented scale would stop the war.
And while it obviously did not stop the US and UK led invasion these protests, and others that followed, were credited with swaying the governments of Canada and Turkey and laying the foundation of anti-war sentiment that likely reduced the length of the occupation.
