Description
"Pupu A O Ewa" is a traditional Hawaiian song that evolved to become a pop song and then a commercial jingle - a somewhat unusual life line. The title translates to "Shells of Ewa" and refers to pearls found at Puʻuloa, the Hawaiian name for Pearl Harbor.
This version uses only the hui or chorus of the song and adds the hui of a great Big Island song, "Maika`i Ka Makani O Kohala" - "Fine Are the Winds of Kohala." I've been told that these two are traditionally performed as a medley and indeed they seem to complement each other.
I arranged this medley in a somewhat unusual tuning, D wahine. This is an open D tuning that includes a C#, the major 7 of the key of D. The tuning is spelled D A D F# A C# from low pitch to high. This tuning sounds especially rich and full on my Yamamoto OM-Y guitar. I used my Schoeps CMC61 microphones into the Zoom F6 to capture the audio. For video I used a Panasonic Lumix GH5 and a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. I used REAPER to tweak the audio and DaVinci Resolve to create the final video.
