Originally composed for piano and voice by Felix Mendelssohn in 1834, Franz Liszt arranged this song for solo piano in 1840. The words are from a poem written by Heinrich Heine in 1827.
Julius Katchen (1926-1969) was an American concert pianist. He is best known for his recordings of Brahms's piano music. He died of cancer at only 42 years old.
