In 2007, MGMT's debut album Oracular Spectacular launched them into mainstream success with hits like Kids, Time to Pretend, and Electric Feel. But what few realized at the time was that these songs were written with irony.
In an interview with The Guardian, the band revealed that the tracks began as a satirical take on what they considered to be “pompous” and formulaic pop music. The project started as a joke—one they didn’t expect anyone to take seriously.
Yet Columbia Records saw hit potential, and what began as a parody turned into one of the defining indie-pop albums of the 2000s. Rolling Stone later ranked Oracular Spectacular at #494 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Kids has since racked up nearly 1 billion streams on Spotify—ironically becoming everything it set out to mock.
