Description
Lye can be intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. The key is to educate yourself and take your time. This video is sped up to keep things short, but I always move slowly and carefully in real time.
🧪 Lye Mixing Safety Checklist
✅ Keep pets and kids away – Lye is extremely caustic
✅ Wear long sleeves – Reduces exposed skin
✅ Wear gloves – Protects your skin from lye splashes
✅ Wear safety goggles – Prevents serious eye injury from fumes or splashes
✅ Work in a well-ventilated area – Lye releases fumes that can be irritating
✅ Use heat-safe, lye-resistant containers – Avoid aluminum (it reacts with lye); use stainless steel, HDPE plastic, or tempered glass
✅ Always add lye to water (never water to lye) – Prevents dangerous reactions or eruptions
✅ Mix slowly and steadily – Reduces splash risk and heat buildup
✅ Label your container if not using immediately – Prevents dangerous mix-ups
