MORSE CODE OF LOVE, The Capris, Ambient Sound #02697 1982
Flipside: Same (promo copy). Here’s another really great up-tempo song from my music collection. The Capris’ early roots began in Queens, New York in 1958 when the late Nick Santamaria, lead singer for The Capris and known to most as Nick Santo, wrote the song “THERE’S A MOON OUT TONIGHT.” It was first released on (Planet #1010) 1958 and would be released 3 more times; (Lost Nite #101) 1960, (Oldtown #1094) 1960 and (Trommers #101) 1960 with no commercial success.
Finally, in March of 1961, “THERE’S A MOON OUT TONIGHT” became a major hit nationally for The Capris charting 14 weeks on Billboard and reaching #3. Nick Santo was a dear and personal friend and once told me “it was a dream come true” to have a nationally charted Hit song!
I’ve had the privilege of producing The Capris many times in my 40 years in the music business. They appeared in quite a few of my shows in the Atlantic City Casino Showrooms in the 1980’s & 1990’s. Group members singing on this “gem” are Nick Santo (lead), Mike Mincelli (1st tenor), Frank Reina (2nd tenor), Tony Dano (baritone) and Tommy Ferrara (bass).
Nick Santo told me that he wrote “MORSE CODE OF LOVE” in 1958 and no one was interested in the song. When the Ambient Sound albums were released with “MORSE CODE OF LOVE” on it, I was one of the first in New Jersey to play it on my radio show here in Atlantic City.
Whenever The Manhattan Transfer was in town performing in one of the Casino Hotels, the late Tim Hauser of The Transfer would always come into town a few days early to visit with me and Mrs. Mint. I introduced him to all of the new Ambient Sound albums and discussed how great all the songs were.
Over the next couple of months after Tim returned to L.A., I kept on bugging him that I thought The Manhattan Transfer should record “MORSE CODE OF LOVE”. 3 months later he called me and said, “Well Ron, you got your wish. We are going to record “MORSE CODE OF LOVE” for Atlantic Records.” When I told Nick Santo, I can’t tell you enough how happy he was that his song was going to get national exposure from the world famous ‘Manhattan Transfer’. Royalties, royalties LOL.
Whenever I was in the audience attending a Manhattan Transfer concert Tim would always acknowledge me in the audience and say, “If it wasn’t for my friend Ron (Mr. Mint) we would have never recorded “MORSE CODE OF LOVE”.
Enjoy this really “GREAT” up-tempo song “MORSE CODE OF LOVE” by The Capris with my dear friend the late Nick Santo singing lead as we honor him for his musical contribution to the world.
