With UNESCO having decided last month to add the Korean cold noodle dish Pyongyang Raengmyon to its list of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage, North Korea, where the recipe has its origins, is touting the dish as a proud part of its heritage to be shown to the world.
The North Korean state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun said in a report on Sunday that the reason Pyongyang Raengmyon it has become well-known is because all its elements are unique.
Raengmyon is a cold noodle dish using beef broth enjoyed in both South and North Korea and described by UNESCO as an important part of community life in the North.
The listing of the Pyongyang variety brings the total number of North Korean entries on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage to four along with a North Korean version of the traditional folk song "Arirang," the North Korean kimchi-making tradition and ssireum wresting.
