Lyrics translated by Mathias Nordvig
98) Auk nēhw ēbanþi skalþū, Wōdan, kwema, jabai þū wiljat þair maiþila mainijan. Allaz arun unskōp nemanā ainazaz witi swēlikijan lustuz samana.
Translation: And at evening, Odin, you should come back if you want to talk with the girl. Everything will be lost unless we share this lust together.
99) After ek hwarba, auk unnanā þanhtamz wīssom wilja fram: hwīt ek hūgþa at ek haba munta gaban hezōi allaz auk gamana.
Translation: I came back and thought that I was loved: this is what I thought that I would have the love of her and all her passion.
84) Magwiaz wurþum skulanā managā trūwija, nē hwī arun kweþaz kwāna: hwīat ān hverbanda hwēhwli wāsa þaima hiertōn skōpoþ, brekuþ in breustā umbi lagat.
Translation: never trust the words of a young maid, nor what a woman says: because on whirling wheels were their hearts made, deceit was laid in their breast.
91) Berhtaz ek nū maþli hwīat ek baiþi wīta: brekuþuz arun karilaza hūguz kwānam; sā wēraz fagrazt maiþilom arun wēraz flāzast hūgizom, þat tailiz hōrizka hūgiz.
Translation: I can speak openly because I know both: men’s hearts are deceitful towards women; they speak most fairly and think most falsely, that catches the noblest mind.
Dr. Mathias Nordvig writes about Safijan:
Longing and the deep desire that comes from unsatisfied lust leads us to take risks. Such risk-willingness of the unexperienced and lustful youths can be exploited and taken for granted by those who do not know themselves. Men and women both know that they can be frivolous, reckless, and deceitful. Wōdan learned these lessons just like he taught them in ancient times. He was the lustful lover whose desire was exploited and mocked, and he was the desired man with the upper hand, who used the young woman’s lust against her.
