Description
One of many 'myths' surrounding Blue Monday is that it was never edited. Certainly at first it wasn't, and it didn't need to be either, it never lets up with new tricks and surprises along the way, even at the end where New Order layers as many synth lines as possible, it holds your attention. BM was edited though, there's an edit, which I think is from Japan which does a pretty good job of hacking the song into a 7" single format.
Then there's the 1988 remix, which from what I can tell was a complete remake by the band which was then handed over to John “Tokes” Potoker and Quincy Jones to mess with. Before you complain that they added all of the daft samples, I'm pretty sure the band assembled those too. Later in the mid-90s Hardfloor did a decent house remix which may even have re-recorded vocals by Bernard on it. This too had a 7" edit, which works and I like a lot.
As much as I like the Japanese edit (which the online Recycle project from 2009-10 helpfully shared), I wanted to try my own edit. I used the 1988 edit as a template for editing the original 1983 version. Editing the outro was difficult, so I had to compromise and use less of the percussion fills because I couldn't condense the sections without it sounding horrible.
I know a lot of people are going to dislike this one, (it's sacrilege right?) but it's only really an exercise in editing and not a replacement for the original 12" or the 1988 7" edit.
