Title: North Korean leader's uncle executed for treason
Let's start with the huge news out of North Korea...
Jang Song-thaek has been executed following a short military trial that found him guilty of treason.
The once powerful uncle of leader Kim Jong-un, stripped of his power just a few days ago, was accused of forming a faction against the state and harboring his own political ambitions.
Ji Myung-kil reports.
The North's Korean Central News Agency reported early Friday that the uncle of leader Kim Jong-un had been executed.
Jang Song-thaek, long considered as the country's second most powerful man and Kim Jong-un's former mentor, was sentenced to death for being a traitor who had tried to overthrow the state.
Jang was executed after admitting to his crimes before a military tribunal on Thursday, the North said in a statement released by its state-run news agency.
The execution comes just four days after Jang was dramatically removed from a Workers' Party session by armed guards.
According to the agency's statement, Kim Jong-un accused Jang and his allies of double-dealing behind the scenes, dreaming different dreams, and selling the country's resources at cheap prices... thereby threatening North Korea's economic development.
Jang's removal marks the most significant shake-up in two years under Kim's leadership and suggests the North's young leader is willing to go after his rivals publicly, and in ways more secretive than his father Kim Jong-il ever did.
The North has never so explicitly described the crimes or the punishment of a high-level official before.
Pyongyang labeled Jang "a traitor to the nation" and "worse than a dog" in its report.
Jang was married to Kim Jong-un's aunt, Kim Kyong-hui, the younger sister of late leader Kim Jong-il.

Title: South Korea holds emergency national security meeting on Jang Song-thaek's execution
The South Korean government held an emergency security meeting Friday morning on the current political situation in the North, following the announcement of Jang's execution.
During the two-hour meeting, presided over by the presidential national security chief, Kim Jang-soo,... Seoul's top security officials reportedly discussed preparations for any contingencies.
South Korea has been strengthening its military readiness since the announcement on Sunday that Jang was removed from his government posts, to prepare for any possible provocations by the North as the communist state tightens leader Kim Jong-un's grip on the country.
