Another Transcription Tuesday! This week I'm featuring one of my favourite vocalists with Samara Joy's version of Fats Navaro's tune "Nostalgia (The Day I Knew)", off of her 2022 album "Linger Awhile".

Navaro's version comes off of a 1947 recording with his quintet. His composition is actually a contrafact of an older tune, the classic jazz standard "Out Of Nowhere" by Johnny Green. Contrafacts, which are new melodies written over existing chord changes and song structures, are a classic part of the jazz tradition, and this is a great example of this practice.

This transcription features Joy's performance of the head and her vocalese of Navaro's solo, with lyrics written by her. A must hear for any jazz vocalist!
