Description
"O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" comes from a long Latin poem which is often associated with Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153), but is now attributed to the Medieval poet Arnulf of Leuven, abbot of the Cistercian abbey in Villers-la-Ville (died 1250). It was translated into German in the seventeenth century by Paul Gerhardt. Although he translated the whole poem, it is the last canto which was used as a hymn: 'O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden'. This was translated into English by James W. Alexander in 1829.
The tune is known as 'The Passion Chorale', which was written by Hans Leo Hassler in 1601 as a setting of a secular song, '"Mein G'müt ist Mir Verwirret'. it was adapted in 1656 by Johann Crüger for use with Gerhardt's hymn and later became famous for its use in J S Bach's 'St Matthew Passion' and several of his cantatas.
It is performed here by the York College Concert Choir.
