Description
Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley formed the nucleus of Brewer and Shipley in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Their sole hit, "One Toke Over the Line," from its album "Tarkio," was, at the urging of the head Kama Sutra Records, a must-have for the album.
After another duo performed the song on the Lawrence Welk show, its host called the song a "modern spiritual," to which the composers rebutted that they were known as "subversives," by the current administration. They felt that this appearance, however, gained them more publicity than they could buy.
The duo and its surrounding members continued to make a few more albums, with their last two recorded in the 1990s. Here is my few-years-old version of the song by these "one-hit wonders."
