For years, internet sleuths searched tirelessly for its origin, with many believing it wasn’t even real, just a 3D render.
But the key to the mystery was hiding in plain sight all along. The team re-discovered a tweet from 2019 revealing the link for the original photo. But the link was inactive, so the team used the WayBack Machine and discovered a 2003 blog post documenting the renovation of a HobbyTown store's RC car racetrack in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. And there it was – the Backrooms photo, accompanied by another shot of the location from a different angle, confirming its existence in the real world!
