In this Electric Guitar tutorial I break down Paranoid by Black Sabbath. The song is in the Key of Em and uses powerchords high up the neck to get that signature Tony Iommi sound.

The song utilises palm muted power chords in the rhythm section and lots of hammerons and pull offs throughout. This piece is an excellent exercise for any student of the guitar.

Tony Iommi used a Gibson SG, Dallas Rangemaster Treble booster and a Laney amplifier. For this tutorial I used my 2016 Gibson SG standard and a Boss Katana 50 Gen 3. I break down the settings in detail in the video.

This lesson had been planned for a while but with the recent passing of Ozzy Osbourne I thought I would release it sooner than planned.

Ozzy’s music in both Black sabbath and his solo career shaped me musically in the early years and I wanted to tip my hat to him because learning these songs as a youngster excited me more than anything that was new and current at the time.

Paranoid is arguably one of the most famous Sabbath riffs but I believe it’s one of the more accessible ones and everyone should have a go.
