Earlier this week, the news of Malinitai's demise reached us. Malinitai Rajurkar was (it was hard to write the "was") a renowned singer from the Gwalior gharana tradition, who had her own ethereal and beautiful style of singing, which was a combination of simplicity, humility and eccentricity. I was particularly fascinated by how tai handled Ranga Na Daro Shyamji, a very well-known Kumarji bandish in Raga Sohani. It is a bandish that has become very popular, and is nowadays sung by a lot of current contemporary singers. Kumarji's renditions being the baseline, bring out a playful quality in the raga and bandish. Malinitai's rendition has it's own nuances, and it's own style. Her "Kehan" (the closest translation to this term is enunciation of syllables and phrases) brings out a different character, more urgency and a different side of Raga Sohani, as it highlights the playing of Holi alongside the eternal Lord Shri Krishna. I also try to sing “Ranga Na Daro Shyamji” as a tribute to Malinitai, and her beautiful music.
