Si-Ji Village in Yilan has strong Atayal roots. Verchow returns to the place where his mother grew up in order to reunite with long lost relatives and fulfill a childhood dream. His cultural mentor, Chalaw, comes bearing gifts at their first meeting and introduces local musician Ipay Buyici. Together, they set out to uncover Sijhou's musical identity, and prepare to face the challenges of their upcoming journey exploring Austronesian cultures.

“Songs of Our Ancestors” is a new music documentary series exploring the Austronesian diaspora. Join our hosts—Stephen Rong, aka Verchow Shuvee, a Taiwanese-American with Atayal roots, and Chalaw Basiwali, an Amis singer-songwriter and cultural mentor—as they take a personal journey through Taiwan’s Indigenous cultures. Together they meet local musicians and explore community life, all in an effort to create fresh folk tunes that combine local traditions with modern musical styles.
