Description
Rhonda Fleming, who passed away on October 14, was one of a select group of movie stars who lit up the screen for me in the Fifties. After appearing in eight movies — three of them uncredited — the red-haired beauty also revealed she could sing when starring with Bing Crosby in 'A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court' [1949], a role that led to her becoming known as 'The Queen of Technicolor'! She swept me away in the musical 'Those Redheads From Seattle' [1953], in whichTeresa Brewer also delighted; as Semiramis in the splendid Italian kitsch of 'Queen Of Babylon' [1956], for which she received top billing; two of my favourite film noir releases, 'The Killer Is Loose' [1956], with Joseph Cotton and Wendell Corey, and 'While The City Sleeps' [1956], with an impressive cast that included George Sanders, Howard Duff, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price, John Drew Barrymore and Ida Lupino; 'The Buster Keaton Story' [1957], alongside Donald O'Connor and Ann Blyth; the great Western 'Gunfight At The O.K. Corral' [1957], with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas; and the star-laden 'The Big Circus' [1959], written and produced by Irwin Allen, a decade before 'The Poseidon Adventure' [1972] and 'The Towering Inferno' [1974] would make him king of the disaster movies genre.
The six-times married Rhonda released a limited number of recordings — among them her movie duets with Crosby, four 1954/5 titles as part of a quartet whose other members were Jane Russell, Connie Haines and Beryl Davis, a splendid 1958 album simply titled 'Rhonda', and a 1961 updating of the Guy Mitchell hit "My Heart Cries For You". From her only album, comes "Under Paris Skies", written by Jean Dréjac and Hubert Giraud (English lyrics by Kim Gannon) for the 1951 French film 'Sous le ciel de Paris', and popularised by Gallic artists such as Juliette Greco, Édith Piaf and Yves Montand.
