Description
Varsity Eight (California Ramblers) - Hard Hearted Hannah (The Vamp Of Savannah) Cameo 1924 (USA)
NOTE: The California Ramblers (Varsity Eight was one of their label names) were of the best East Coast American jazz-dance bands of the Roaring Twenties. They recorded hundreds of songs under many different record labels throughout the 1920s. They also recorded many early jazz tunes as the small instrumental ensamble The Goofus Five. Three of the members of the band, Red Nichols, Jimmy Dorsey, and Tommy Dorsey, would go on to front famous big bands in later decades.
The song "Hard Hearted Hannah" was made popular in 1924 by vocalist Margaret Young https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RivvM2Z-QE0
It tells in humorous fashion the story of a "vamp" or femme fatale from Savannah, Georgia "the meanest gal in town." The slideshow presents portraits of some of such bland, modern gals of the Jazz Age, who loved "to see men suffer."
