“She Used To Be Mine” es el primer single promocional de su quinto álbum de estudio: Songs From Waitress, que salió el 6 de noviembre del 2015.

La canción fue escrita para el musical de Broadway: Waistress (Mesera), que está basada en la película del 2007 del mismo nombre, protagonizada por Keri Russell.

La canción es cantada por la protagonista en el musical. Cerca del final del segundo acto cuando ella toca fondo, lidiando con un embarazo no deseado y un marido violento. Ella está completamente perdida y su pena y desesperación, han hecho casi imposible recordar quien era. Ella se queja por perderse, pero gana confianza a media que la canción avanza.

La reflexión de Sara:
Esta canción fue la primera que escribí para este musical. Y tengo que decir que estaba muy conmovida viendo la película, ese fue el momento cuando supe que esto era algo tremendamente interesante. Inmediatamente estuve deslumbrada y muy inspirada por el mundo que Adrienne Shelly creó en esta película. Es imperfecto, conmovedor, desastroso, optimista, feminista y realmente sincero.

Y creo que hay una escena en la pelícla donde Jenna, quien está intentando reunir el valor y el dinero para dejar a su abusivo marido, se percata de todo y siente que perdió toda la esperanza. Y Keri Russel interpreta a Jenna en la película y estpa este hermoso momento en la pantalla donde miras que decide mentir otra vez. Y para mí eso fue la semilla para la siguiente canción, me trajo esta idea de que muchas veces nos encontramos a nosotros mismos dentro de nuestras vidas y no sabemos cómo llegamos allí, y muchas veces eso es algo hermoso y estamos agradecidos por, tú sabes, "¿Cómo llegamos aquí?". (Sin embargo) Otras muchas veces no nos reconocemos.

“She Used To Be Mine” is the first promotional single from the fifth studio album, What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress, by Sara Bareilles. It is set to be released on November 6th, 2015.

The song was written for the 2016 Broadway musical, Waitress, based on the 2007 film of the same name starring Keri Russell.

The song is sung by the lead character in the musical. It comes near the end of the second act when she has hit rock bottom, dealing with an unwanted pregnancy and an abusive husband. She is completely lost and her sorrow and despair have made it almost impossible to remember who she is inside. She’s mourning her lost self, but gains confidence as the song progresses.

Sara’s thoughts from the album release:

This song was the first song I ever wrote for this musical. And I have to say that I was so moved by watching this film when I was first approached to even see if this was something I was interested in doing […] I was immediately so struck and so inspired by the world that Adrienne Shelly creates in this film. It is imperfect and soulful and messy and optimistic and feminist and really true.
And I think that there’s a scene in the movie where Jenna, who is trying to muster up the courage and the money to leave her abusive marriage, gets found out and she feels like all of her hope is lost. And Keri Russell plays Jenna in the movie and there’s this beautiful moment on the screen where you just watch her decide to lie again. And to me that was the seed for this next song, and it spoke to this idea that in so many ways we find ourselves inside of our lives and we don’t know how we got there, and a lot of times that’s a beautiful thing and we’re grateful for, you know, “how did I get here?” And a lot of times we don’t recognize ourselves.
