Description
Sebastián Durón received his first musical instruction from his elder brother, Diego. He then studied organ under Andrés de Sola, and became his assistant at the Cathedral in Zaragoza. In 1691, he acquired the prestigious position of organist at the Royal Chapel of King Carlos II in Madrid. Shortly after that monarch died in 1700, Durón accepted several other positions under King Felipe V; he was now Master of the Royal Chapel, Director of the Royal Choral School, and also directed the Royal Theater, for which he composed operas and “zarzuelas”. He went into exile in France in 1706, along with the Queen-consort of Carlos II, who had become unwelcome at the court of Felipe V. Durón died of tuberculosis in Aquitaine (France). Today, Durón is recognized as one of the greatest Spanish musicians & composers of his time. The present piece, a “tiento” (a term used in Spain for a type of composition similar to a fugue), was probably meant mainly for organ, but is also quite playable on the harpsichord, or the spinet, as in the recording.
