Similes and Metaphors in Songs.

Description

I used this video to highlight and teach similes and metaphors to a 9th grade English class. I had them keep a tally of the ones they heard and then talked about them afterwards.

List of Artists/Songs/ Figurative language:

Selena Gomez, "Naturally"- two metaphors. "You are the thunder" "I am the lightening" (Could be connected to one metaphor)
Far East Movement, "Like a G6" -- one simile. "Now I am feeling to fly like a G6"
Brittany Spears, "Circus"- one simile. "All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus...when I crack that whip everybody gonnna trip just like a circus."
Nikki Minaj, "Roman's Revenge"- one simile. "I am starting to feel like a dungeon dragon."
Gym Class Heroes, "Stereo Hearts"- One metaphor. This is a tricky one because different aspects of the metaphor are repeated. They talk about melody of the heart playing for the one person, hearing every note, turning up the sound, and singing along. However, these are all apart of the main metaphor, "My heart's a stereo it beats for you so listen close."
David Guetta, "Titanium"- Two metaphors. "I am bulletproof, fire away fire away." "I am titanium".
Justin Bieber, "Boyfriend" --one simile, one metaphor. "I can be your buzzlight year, fly across the globe" "Imma make you shine bright like you're lying in the snow."
Rascal Flatts, "Life is a Highway"- one metaphor. Like Stereo Hearts this one is tricky because they repeat various versions of the same metaphor. Riding it all night long, driving it, all are versions of the metaphor, "Life is a highway".
Calvin Harris, "Feel so Close" --one metaphor, one simile. "I feel so close to you right now, it's a force field'" "Your love falls down on me, surrounds me like a waterfall." Note here that "I wear my heart up on my sleeve like a big deal" is NOT a simile because it does not compare two things but describing.
